Jason Campbell is no stranger to Auburn fans thinking he couldn’t get the job done at quarterback. With Auburn coming into the 2003 season highly ranked and talk of a national championship, the offense sputtered in the first two games, a shutout to USC and scoring just three points against Georgia Tech.

So he knows what current Tigers quarterback Bo Nix is currently going through. Nix has been the talk surrounding Auburn football since he threw three costly interceptions in the 30-22 loss to South Carolina this past Saturday. Campbell, who went on to win the SEC Player of the Year in 2004 after leading the Tigers to an undefeated season, has some words of wisdom for the sophomore quarterback.
“Bo needs to channel himself,” Campbell said during a Wednesday appearance on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5. “This is a time right now that’s very critical for him to hold himself accountable, take a step back and breathe.
“You are seeing a lot of new things from (offensive coordinator) Chad Morris and having a full spring. That’s where you go through these situational drills. You are seeing the effects of it now. Chad’s still trying to figure out Bo’s tendencies. He flushed out of the pocket too early sometimes. That’s where he feels most comfortable.”
Part of the reason that Nix is struggling, Campbell suggests, is that he is used to being the best player on the field even after going through his freshman season where interceptions and passing percentage were also a problem.
“You don’t have to make every play,” Campbell said. “Understand the game is played in situations. At the end of the game, it can be a chess match. They know if they can face you into taking those chances, then they win.”
Nix has yet to look comfortable in the pocket this season, often scrambling soon after the ball is snapped and trying to win with his legs. He also has a problem with something that is key for a quarterback: going to his second or third reads. Many times when he drops back, he will look at his first option and then give up on the play.
Many of the mistakes he makes is when he leaves the pocket, leaving Campbell to conclude that he is pressing.
“In high school, he was a man amongst boys,” Campbell said. “He could outrun a lot of people, get outside the pocket and thrown on the run.”

That isn’t the case now and Nix will have to adjust or get left in the dust.
